I never know what will emerge. As I set my heart and mind into that sacred unknown. That moment between the first stroke and the unfolding story. That’s the alchemy of abstract painting.
When I open the box holding a fresh canvas, there’s a quiet thrill in the blank space, a mystery waiting to unfold. As artist Henri Matisse so perfectly said, “Creativity takes courage.” For me, that courage lies in the first bold gesture—laying down paint without a plan, just an intuitive sense.

Music is my constant companion in the studio. While creating Holding Space, I played a mix that pulsed through the day on Spotify—sonic threads that stitched color into canvas. Curious what that sounded like? I’ve shared my playlist—give it a spin: Spotify music list And tell me: what music brings your creativity alive? Then came the color story: rich medium violet, deep ultramarine blue, and a hand-mixed blend of the two, generously applied with a palette knife in full, intuitive motion. I adore Golden Fluid Acrylics—their pigments are bold, opaque, unapologetically alive.
As for tools: they’re delightfully scrappy. Alongside palette knives and brushes, I reached for rags, paper towels, a spray bottle, even a round pizza box carboard (seriously!) to sculpt texture. I began with a broad house painter’s brush, sweeping leftover flat acrylic house paint across the primed 20” x 40” canvas, including its edges—always painted as part of the piece.
The transformation from bold gesture to quiet subtlety mirrors the emotional evolution of the creative process itself. Holding Stillness invites the viewer into a state of presence. Layers of soft, tonal fields gently converge and dissolve, evoking both restraint and release. With its muted palette and deliberate rhythm, this large abstract painting captures the energy that lives just beneath calm—the pulse of thought before it becomes form, the hush before transformation. Here’s what emerged after days of layering, stepping back, and trusting the process…
